Roles: Imm: Immigration Officer App: Applicant Section 1 - Download MP3 sound for this section (2,921 Kb) Imm. - Please, tell me about your educational background, Mr. Smirnoff. App. - Gladly! I have a very colorful educational background, with variances taking place as my life saw them fit. In 1987, I graduated from the Moscow State University with a bachelor degree in Engineering. Imm. - Engineering? Then how are you qualified as a programmer? App. - Back then, pure "computer science" degrees did not exist. However, people in engineering studied disciplines that are closely related to programming. Such as Applied Mathematics, Calculus, Differential Equations, Electronic and Computing Systems, Microprocessors, Digital Circuits just to name a few. When I was working on my university thesis I used computers to prepare calculations. Of course the systems back then were quite different from today. Right after graduation I was employed as an Engineer-Designer at the NovEng Factory. You can see this recorded in my Workbook. At that time the Factory was introducing a System of Automated Design. I was sent by the Factory to Specialized Courses to learn this new technology. I learned how to use programming to create Systems of Automated Design and to introduce them into operation. These courses combined with the knowledge I gained in university allowed me to start working as a Computer Programmer with the Department of Automated Design Systems at the NovEng Factory. This fact is also recorded in my Work Records Book. I think it is very important for a Computer programmer to constantly learn and upgrade his professional knowledge. The field of Information Technologies changes almost daily. We have to learn, read and digest new information and new technologies and become better at what we do. As a Computer programmer I am constantly upgrading my knowledge. I read a lot of specialized technical literature and I research the Internet. Speaking of qualification courses I should probably also mention a couple of them, that were relevant to my work. Back in 1987 I completed a Qualification Upgrade Course, called "Fundamental Principals and Development of Automated Design Systems". I brought the Certificate of completion with me today. Here it is. Another course I completed was called "Designing Engineer Work at an Intermediate Level". Here is my certificate of completion. In 1999, I took the appropriate exams and was awarded the certificate of "Microsoft Certified Solution Developer". This demonstrated that I have the skills necessary to lead organizations in successful program design and implementation. Section 2 - Download MP3 sound for this section (1,318 Kb) App. - During the past year I've been working part-time as part of an internationally distributed team of software developers. Imm. - Oh? And what have you been doing? App. - Our first major accomplishment, and the one I'm most proud of was ZoneTick, which is available for download at ZoneTick.com. Imm. - Oh, really? And what does this program do? App. - It shows you time-zones on top of the windows clock, actually. ZoneTick is ironic because we designed it to help ourselves, being a team scattered all over the world. We needed a way to easily tell what time it was where, and this turned into our first product. Imm. - That's convenient. How do you feel about working in a scattered team like this? App. - It's definitely a great experience. First off, the diversity of personalities in our team is very wide, and it's great to work with such different people from such different places. And then there's the quality and professionalism of it all- outsourcing doesn't limit you to the people you have available in your back yard, you know what I mean? Everyone was incredibly professional. The quality of the work was through the roof. Imm. - And you've been doing this part-time. App. - As well as my regular job, yes. Imm. - Can you please tell me more about the company where you're regularly employed, then? Section 3 - Download MP3 sound for this section (6,008 Kb) Imm. - Tell me, how are you going to look for a job in Canada? Do you have any prospective employers or contacts in Canada? What makes you sure you will find a job, at all? App. - I am very happy with the progress I have done so far with my career. I believe I am ready for the next step which is my professional Immigration to Canada. I know I can use, develop and expand my professional skills and realize myself professionally to the fullest in Canada. I know I will find a job as a Computer Programmer in Canada. I am very confident that I will be successful in finding the right job in a short period of time. Even though I don't have a definite employer yet, I have a very good idea of the market of professionals like myself in Canada. I've also purchased WRConsulting's Job Interview Solution, to help me prepare for the employment search. It is a very thorough product that has aided me a lot in planning. Let me assure you that I am going to be very aggressive in finding a job. With my educational background, my vast experience and my letters of reference, I feel very comfortable entering the Canadian Professional Market. Like I said before, I can apply my knowledge and experience virtually in any sphere of business. We are going to settle down in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to the information from the BC Work Futures website http://workfutures.bc.ca/, employment prospects for computer programmers in B.C. are very good. The average annual growth rate in computer programming employment in B.C. is 4.5%, much faster than the average for all other occupations. In fact, this occupation (and related ones, such as computer systems analysts) is projected to be among the fastest growing professional occupation in the B.C. economy. According to this projection, a total of 6,260 positions will become available before 2008. Three-quarters of these openings are projected to result from growth in the number of new positions, and the remainder will come from the need to replace workers who retire. These statistics make me very excited about future possibilities for myself as a professional. The area of my specialization is always on the "Hot Vacancies" list in many recruiting agencies. As a matter of fact, I did a search a few months ago and very recently on the Internet and, both times, found positions, which perfectly match my qualification as a Programmer. Specialists in my field of work are constantly in demand. I am looking forward to the many opportunities that I know I will find in Canada and I am very excited about them. Imm. - How exactly are you planning to look for a job? App. - I am going to use all the available means to find a job. I believe I am ready to start looking for a job effectively the very first day I arrive to Canada. I am going to look for a job through the recruiting companies, newspapers, newsgroups and specialized magazines. I will be mailing my resume directly to Human Recourses Offices of all the perspective employers in BC. I am constantly revising my resume. I am trying to make it attractive and up-to-date. I know I should stay focused and be patient. Imm. - Will you be using the Internet for your job-search? App. - Absolutely. I am a big fan of the Internet. It has seemingly unlimited resources, and you can find all sorts of interesting things on the net. It seems like you can find an answer to almost any question there. Someone said that in this century the key to power is in access to information. If you know how to get and use information you will succeed in today's world. I've already started my job search: besides contacting recruiters, I am a subscriber to JobsVancouver and JobsBC Mailing Lists. I constantly check for vacancies on job-search web-sites such as canadajobs.com and actualjobs.com. For example, last week while researching the Internet, I found positions that perfectly match my qualification. I will also apply directly to firms by sending a detailed resume with a cover letter highlighting my qualifications for the position. As far as I know Computer Programmers are involved in a broad range of subject matter in diverse industries. Many are employed in manufacturing plants, banks, research and development laboratories, training and development companies, health care and insurance companies, computer software and hardware firms, and as part of the staff of technical film makers. With my skills and references, I am sure I have a good chance of finding a job in a short period of time. Imm. - Why do you think you will be better off professionally in Canada? There are so many recent graduates in Canada- they are familiar with the latest technologies and trends, they all speak fluent English, they are also out there hunting for jobs.
